What is Product-Market Fit?

The Product-Market Fit survey, created by Sean Ellis (founder of GrowthHackers), measures how essential your product is to users. It's the most predictive indicator of startup success.

The PMF Question:

"How would you feel if you could no longer use [product]?"

The 40% Rule:

If 40% or more of users say they'd be "very disappointed," you've achieved product-market fit. Below 40%, you need to iterate on your product.

Benchmarks:

  • 40%+: Product-market fit achieved
  • 25-39%: Close - iterate and improve
  • <25%: Need significant changes

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should I survey for PMF?
Survey active users who have experienced your product's core value - not just signed up. Aim for users who've been active for at least 2 weeks and have used your product at least twice. Avoid surveying churned users or those who never engaged.
How many responses do I need?
Aim for at least 40-50 responses for reliable results. For early-stage products, even 20-30 responses can give directional insight. As you grow, segment by user type to find your highest-fit customer profiles.
What if I'm below 40%?
Don't panic! Focus on the "very disappointed" users - they're your superfans. Understand what they love and double down on it. Survey the "somewhat disappointed" group to find what's missing. Iterate until you cross 40%.
Should I segment my PMF results?
Yes! You might have PMF with a specific segment but not others. Segment by: company size, industry, use case, acquisition channel, or user role. Finding your highest-PMF segment helps focus your go-to-market strategy.
How often should I measure PMF?
Monthly or quarterly for early-stage products actively iterating. Once you've achieved PMF, measure quarterly to ensure you're maintaining fit as you add features and acquire new user types. PMF can be lost if you drift from your core value.

Did you know 80% of software features are rarely or never used? That's a lot of wasted effort.

SaaS software companies spend billions on unused features. In 2025, it was $29.5 billion.

We saw this problem and decided to do something about it. Product teams needed a better way to decide what to build.

That's why we created ProductLift - to put all feedback in one place, helping teams easily see what features matter most.

In the last five years, we've helped over 3,051 product teams (like yours) double feature adoption and halve the costs. I'd love for you to give it a try.
